Street Angels

STREET ANGELS

The Matrix Trust is excited and privileged to be able to support Guildford's Street Angels scheme which was launched in October 2008 at a special Commissioning Service where 300 worshippers gathered, including Bishops and church leaders, our MP, Civic dignitaries and Police leaders.

The Street Angels scheme has grown rapidly all over the country in the last five years. Fully trained volunteers give up a night a month to be present on the streets of Guildford until the nightclubs close. The aim is that they will be a reassuring presence offering practical help and support - particularly to any who find themselves vulnerable. The scheme is funded by many different Guildford churches and most of the volunteers are from the Christian community. The Police have been very supportive of the 'Angels' and Temporary Chief Constable Mark Rowley offered his own support on the first night. "This is an extremely exciting venture which should reassure the community in Guildford with a visible presence which should help prevent crime and the fear of crime. These volunteers are prepared to go out on the streets into the early hours to extend a helping hand to vulnerable individuals who may need some care. I wish them every success and together I hope Surrey Police and the Street Angels can work side by side for the benefit of the town."

The scheme has been developed as part of the developing Town Centre Chaplaincy project which has raised the funds and recruited the volunteers. The Matrix Trust was asked if we could help practically as the employer of the Street Angels coordinator. We are of course delighted to do so.
