Christ College pupils start Dance Company

Youth Work in Schools

Schools Workers are highly valued members of a school team serving as an 'adult friend' to students. While they are not counsellors much of their time is spent as a 'listening ear' in one to one meetings. In addition, they also lead school groups, organise trips, sporting and charity events and help with lessons

Earlier in 2010, two year 11 girls from Christ’s College Guildford applied for some funding from the High Sheriff Youth Awards to bring in a community dance teacher and run weekly sessions for those interested in dance after school on a Wednesday. They successfully received the funding and the group began. There has been a good turnout, not the numbers we hoped, but those who do show are committed and energised and willing to learn, having fun in the process. We put on a showcase at the end of May to raise money for a charity working with AIDS orphans, and we have also been invited to perform at Celebrating Surrey, a large scale arts festival, taking place on 26th and 27th June 2010 at Loseley Park, Guildford.

Recently two of the dancers performed at a cross-schools competition in The Maltings, Farnham, representing CCG. The lessons and skills they are learning and developing will be able to be used more widely than just one day a week, even after the sessions have finished. We are hoping to get more people involved in dance and performing at local events and venues but none of this would have been possible had it not been for the funding received by the High Sheriff and the young people that are involved so .…WELL DONE!!
