‘When the country is in chaos, everybody has a plan to fix it – but it takes a leader of real understanding to straighten things out.’
Proverbs 28:2 (The Message)
Letter from Ian Nicholson
Executive Director
Dear friends of Matrix
Like you, I was shaken to the core by the sudden outburst of looting and violence in London during the summer. What particularly hit me was not so much the rioting but the underlying sickness and hopelessness of spirit which led thousands onto the streets to engage in mindless destruction. At about the same time, the local press (Surrey Advertiser, 19th July 2011) reported that ‘thousands of children in Guildford are living in poverty. Some of these disadvantaged children will typically live ten years less and are twice as likely to become disabled in life, often leaving school without skills and qualifications.’
For several days, I confess to battling with feelings of helplessness and doubt. The problems appear so big and endemic; the resources are increasingly hard to access, and genuine understanding of the issues is often lacking. Can we make any real difference? As I have reflected on the passage from the Bible (Proverbs 28 v 2 above), I have become increasingly convinced that the church has an opportunity to bring authoritative leadership - it is a time of huge opportunity. However, our response needs to be both creative and courageous.
'It is difficult to overstate the impact of groups like The Matrix Trust on the overall well being of our community. Matrix plays a huge part in providing support to young people, preventing them committing crime and harming themselves. They form an integral part of a community partnership that works quietly in the background.
Chief Inspector Matthew Goodridge – Borough Police Commander, Guildford
Our society is fractured in many ways – whether that is spiritual, physical, emotional or relational brokenness . The Matrix Trust is recommitting itself to ‘rebuild in a broken world’: we exist, in Christ’s name, to engage with the most vulnerable in our community. We are confident that real understanding comes as we are involved at the grass roots and so each day, Matrix personnel are engaging with very challenging situations – whether that is in schools, among spiritual seekers, on estates and student campuses or at football clubs. Activities include personal mentoring, alpha courses, prayer spaces in schools, Christian Union support, youth clubs, chaplaincy, detached youth work, creative outreach events and community renewal projects. In all this, we see ourselves as an expression of the church in our town – enabling local believers to unite and reach out.
Matrix Schools Workers see up to 60 students with specific needs on an individual basis each week.
‘Our respect for the professionalism and impact of the Matrix staff, working with some of our most vulnerable students, grows year by year; they are a crucial part of the George Abbot community’.
D C Moloney (Headteacher George Abbot School)
As we look ahead to 2012, we face significant challenges as financial cuts bite and budgets begin to creak at the seams. Despite the growth and blessing of the past, we cannot presume that the Church’s presence in the community through these projects will continue. The core of the Matrix for the last 11 years has been the incredible generosity of the local Christian community, and it is for this reason that we are asking again for your ongoing prayer and financial support as we move into the coming year.
Despite reducing costs significantly in 2011, we have also seen a number of younger workers coming through in the last 12 months – as well as a growing pool of volunteers. Our urgent target this year is to raise an additional £60,000 to enable key schools’ and community work to continue, and projects such as Ready4Action to happen again. This can seem daunting, but God has been faithful in the past and it is achievable. For example we could reach that target through:
• 2 Trusts, businesses or individuals each donating £10,000
• 10 churches donating £1000
If you are in a position to start, or increase, your financial support of Matrix, the resources will be invaluable and very well spent. To respond please download and fill in the attached response form; gifts can be focussed on particular projects if you wish.
We prioritise time to meet with businesses or church leadership teams to discuss how we can partner more strongly, and are always available to contribute in church meetings to bring encouragements of what God is doing in our town
‘Since starting 2 ½ years ago, over 120 young people have been involved with the weekly Youth Club on the Bushy Hill estate. Previously there was nothing organised.’
Ewan Petty, Matrix Youth Worker
Thank you for your friendship and support - please contact me at any time with thoughts, encouragements or questions.
As we move ahead it is a challenging time but God’s promises are true, and He cannot break His word!
With gratitude for your support
Ian Nicholson
