Chaplaincy

Chaplaincy

Since the start of the 2008/9 season, the Trust's Director, Ian Nicholson has been appointed Woking Football Club's first Chaplain

A lifelong supporter Ian had approached the club just as they were looking to strengthen the support structures for players, staff and volunteers.

Ian says "I am really excited about this great opportunity for myself and Matrix. Chaplaincy is a growing role as the church engages more positively with the community. Chaplains are emerging in Universities, nightclubs, schools, the police force, department stores or on the streets through initiatives like Street Angels. 75% of professional football clubs like Woking now have a Chaplain".

“Football Clubs are a key element in the fabric of local life - often connecting families and communities over many generations. They can also be quite intense and turbulent with lots of pressure. It is important in clubs like Woking that people are valued and come first. Chaplains have time focussed on being a support, encouragement and listening ear to all those associated with the club - whether players, management, staff, youth or fans.

It is also important that Football Clubs play their part in the community and I want to help Woking play an even more positive role locally. It is also important that the churches get involved and do what they can to support their local side.”

This role fits very much with the Matrix ethos of enabling churches to work together in the community. It is another door opening and if you would like to talk to Ian about his developing role with the club please email him on chaplain@wokingfc.co.uk
